Specialisation Research Report

I learned basic character design and some animal anatomy. From the resources that I’ve used I have started to learn how to design character more effectively. I also learned how to implement animal anatomy into my monster girl designs. Along with that I have been looking at using limited colour palettes to give myself a bit of a challenge to make appealing character designs while keeping the colours simple.

I used inspiration from 2 of my favourite artists (TwistedDisaster & Arofexdracona on deviantart) at the moment who also use limited colour palettes to make interesting designs. I also used many resources from pinterest on how to make interesting and appealing designs. As as looking on tumblr and deviantart to find tutorials on how to draw animal anatomy as well as finding reference poses for my designs.

Resources I have been using so far:

Tkturials - Digitigrade Legs Guide

Overall I mainly looked at a mix of resources I’ve found on deviantart, youtube and pinterest to help me in my endeavor on creating appealing designs. I used the first tutorial to learn how to draw/ implement animal legs on a humanoid character. For the pinterest boards I specifically looked at the creature design ones to also help me with the ‘monster’ aspect of the designs. I used a lot of the tips from the 3rd link such as the first tip being ‘always start with a concept’ and my concept was of course ‘monster girls’. I also used the second tip which was always do a warm up drawing, which I would do, whether it be starting some personal work or finishing a previous piece. Another thing was to also keep the designs fairly simple but interesting enough to make them stand out.

In summary;

What I have learnt from my resources

That regarding character design It’s really up to what the artist finds appealing and what inspires them to created these characters. Always make sure to do warm up drawings before you start your designing process to get you loose and ready for the endeavour and also have a concept to help decide what kind of character/s you would like to design.

How I implemented what I learned

I took and interpreted my own process on character designing and how to make appealing yet simple characters with minimal colours. I used some animal anatomy to create my monster girls while breaking my comfort zone as I haven’t drawn many animals so it proved a challenge to me but I managed to work through it as the characters were fairly humanoid.

Overall I felt that I have expanded my designing skills quite a bit since beginning this tri and I am on the way to progressing even further by redesigning some of my first characters I made back in 2014.
